PROMOTING
TRAVELLER HEALTH
IN SOUTH EAST GALWAY
The aim of the programme are:
• To ensure active participation of Travellers and Traveller organisations in determining the different health priorities amongst Traveller Community;
• To develop and support Traveller capacity to engage meaningfully in decision-making with regard to the planning and provision of culturally appropriate health services in the county;
• Develop ways whereby the Health inequalities and concerns as determined by Travellers are addressed in a culturally appropriate way;
• To work to ensure a sustainable peer-led resource for health development work with Travellers in the county;
Past Work:
The workers developed health training and community development training for Travellers in Galway County.
• Coordination of 5 week Traveller and Human Rights training course attended by 70 participants including some 40 Traveller women and men and service providers;
• Coordination and development of the Regional Traveller Health Network;
• Building links between the Rural Project and key information outlets such as ITM, Pavee Point, Citizen’s Information Service, Equality Authority, by attending meetings and participating on committees and advisory groups;
Current Work:
• Coordination and delivery of training programmes with Traveller groups in South East Galway, including coherent set of sessions on: Discrimination, Rights and Entitlements, Traveller Culture, Health Information, Community development, Leadership, Communication, Decision Making, Political Structures;
• Lobby Health Service Providers by building relationships with key actors, by actively participating in the THU and RTHN;
• Identify appropriate training for Traveller representatives, through community development projects and statutory agencies;
• Set up discrimination Log book and develop guidelines on follow up;
