Anti Racism

Anti racism work is integral to the work of the Galway Traveller Movement. In the GTM strategic Plan for 2007 – 2009 there are key areas of work identified

Key Strategic Activities
Develop a GTM policy position paper looking at racism and discrimination based on the findings of the Baseline report
Develop and implement a logging system that records Travellers experience of racism in Galway.
Develop and deliver training for logging system within GTM
Organise annual events during International week against racism
Work with the Galway City Partnership to ensure the implementation of the strategy.
Raise awareness of the National and local Action plan against racism amongst the Traveller community.
Work with Travellers to take up key representational roles.
Advocate on behalf of Travellers in relation to racist incidents.
Lobby for culturally appropriate services

Past work
•    The GTM played a very active role in the development and production of the Galway City Anti Racism Strategy “ Towards a City of Equals”.The strategy calls for the elimination of racism. It welcomes diversity and promotes interculturalism
•    The GTM take an active part in organising  events for international Week Against Racism.
•    Ongoing awareness raising with service providers in relation to travellers experience of Racism
•    The GTM were delighted that the strategy states its recognition of Travellers as an ethnic group. This means that it acknowledges that the discrimination that Travellers experience is a particular form of racism. This recognition should influence all services to deliver culturally appropriate services
